Is walleye fishing good in October?
Is walleye fishing good in October?
Perhaps no better time to fish walleye exists than middle and late October, but the truth is, once a lake has turned over, an extended walleye season kicks off that persists through November, into December, and through the ice during the winter months, usually until early or mid-March.
Where are the walleye in the fall?
Typically, I like to target fall walleyes in shallow, weedy lakes by searching along the lake’s first drop-off, that area where the flat that typically extends out from shore starts to drop to deeper depths. On many of the small, shallow lakes I fish this drop-off occurs in depths from 5- to 10-feet deep.

How do you catch pickerel in the fall?
In the winter they can be caught through the ice by jigging with bright and flashy spoons or on tip-ups baited with shiners. In summer and fall, the pickerel’s aggressive nature and indiscriminate palate makes them susceptible to lures such as crankbaits, spinners, and even soft plastics.
What depth do walleye like in fall?
It’s not uncommon to find fall walleyes as deep as 40 feet or more during midday hours on these big lakes. They might also be sitting on the edge – somewhere in the 15- to 25-foot range, depending on the lake. But they typically aren’t far away from a piece of structure, which they’ll also use early and late each day.

Come October and early November, virtually all of the walleye will be relating to the very edge of a point, reef, bar or shoal where it breaks most sharply down to the bottom. From there, they’ll slide over the edge and down to the lake basin, where they’ll spend the winter.
